‘I come from Friesland, so I grew up around water. For me, being on the water means freedom. It’s just you and the elements. It doesn’t matter how well you’ve prepared, there’s always something that doesn’t go to plan. That’s when you need to switch quickly and act appropriately. Basically, it’s the same in my job. You also make plans at work, but encounter unforeseen circumstances. The great thing about NN is that you’re given a lot of scope and freedom to take the initiative.’
‘When I’m not working, I spend time on my other passion: my boat. I’m the proud owner of an historical flat-bottomed boat, which is almost 10 metres long. It takes a lot of work because there’s a huge amount of wood. Everything was made by hand and also has to be maintained by hand. That’s what I love about my boat, the simplicity of the well-crafted techniques used. If you use it optimally, the sailing’s fantastic.’
‘As a young bank, NN has the wind in its sails. We’re growing and the dynamics really appeal to me. NN Bank grants lots of mortgages, which need funding. That’s where I come in. As a Funding Manager, I’m responsible for our financing programmes. I attract long-term funds from institutional investors. That’s important for our bank’s funding requirement because there’s an ever increasing demand for mortgages with a long, fixed-interest period.’
‘When I’m sailing, I sometimes have plans that other people may not readily come up with, such as sailing on the Markermeer lake at night with a full moon and strong winds. Who does that? But that’s how you have the best adventures. At work, I also enjoy devising things that others haven’t done yet. You can do that here. Last year, for example, we set up a new Soft Bullet Covered Bond Programme that enabled us to successfully launch long-term bonds on the market. And recently, we established a Green Bond Framework in line with our sustainability strategy. It allows us to issue green bonds. We use the funds that we raise exclusively to finance sustainable mortgages. That’s how we help to make the Dutch housing market more sustainable.’
‘Recently me and my family moved to a house on the water. We can sail our boat on the Gooimeer lake from there. And our two young sons can play in the water. It’s great that they get to grow up on the water just like I did. And I want to pass on to them that you sometimes encounter the unexpected no matter how well you’ve planned things in advance. The most important thing of all is teamwork and responding appropriately without compromising the collaborative atmosphere. For me, that’s a valuable life lesson.’
