Alessandro Vago

Full Stack Engineer

'By trying things out. you come up with solutions'.

The magic of technology

'As a child, I loved taking electronic toys apart and putting them back together again. I played with robots, electric cars, but I also played music, and when I was a bit older, it was computers. A bit of tinkering, trying things out. That’s how I figure out how things work. It’s pure curiosity because I enjoy it. And basically, I’m still doing it. At work and with my side projects at home and when I play music. I love playing with technology and programming is magical to me: you can influence the world with virtual technology. It’s something that still fascinates me every day.’

It feels like a quick start-up

'As a Full Stack Engineer, you’re a programmer, which means that I work on the technical side of various projects at NN, both front-end and back-end. I’m currently working on Powerly, a platform that helps people discover how they can make their home greener. I work closely with a UX Designer: I put his ideas into practice and look after the technical aspects. Like for example, how do we deal with visitor data? How do we integrate third-party input? All kinds of technical issues’

‘I’m currently working on Powerly full-time, but there’s a pretty quick turnaround of projects here. We focus on innovation, so we’re mainly involved at the start of projects. Because of the variety and the speed, it’s almost like working at a start-up.'

Experimental mindset

‘I have a lot of freedom in the work I do. Essentially, it’s my job to solve problems, but how I do that is completely up to me. I decide what technology to use and the approach I take. I love it. It involves a lot of experimenting and trial and error. What works and what doesn’t? You learn a lot from that because by trying things out, you discover solutions rather than relying on others. We also share the knowledge we gain from our own experiences. It’s part and parcel of what we do.’

‘I also do lots of experimenting at home. I’ve got all kinds of projects on the go that involve playing with technology. For example, I’ve built a machine that mixes cocktails. And I’m currently working on a fully automated irrigation system for my basil plant. Soon, it won’t be me having to keep it alive. How handy is that?’

‘I’m also a huge music lover and play a lot. I sing and I’ve got around five guitars. Composing, like coding, is a question of trial and error. You play and try things out until you’ve got the perfect melody. You could say that the experimental methods I can use at NN really suit me and my mindset. I wouldn’t want things any other way.’

From all corners of the globe

‘About a year ago, I applied for this job at NN from Italy. I’m now working in the Netherlands, but I’m certainly not the only expat. It’s an international environment. And all those colleagues from all corners of the globe also speak to my curious nature. Everyone brings something different to the team, something new. Different people bring different perspectives and that makes you more creative as a group. It also forges close connections and I’ve become good friends with some of my colleagues. We like to play music together or I cook for them. I’ve really fallen on my feet with so many lovely and smart people around me.'
